Pluto, Mickey’s (and my) beloved pup turned 90 on September 5th! Pluto is a character that has been dear to me since childhood. My grandparents used to buy me stuffed animals of him since I was a kid. The Disney Channel would play classic cartoons of his and they will always be my favorite! Pluto seems to try extremely hard to not get into trouble, but somehow trouble ends up finding him. Here are a few fun facts about Pluto, Disney’s beloved dog!

Pluto is a Bloodhound

Walt Disney was inspired to create Pluto based on the dogs he was around growing up. In 1930, Pluto makes his debut in the cartoon called, “The Chain Gang.” Mickey escapes the Chain Gang and bloodhounds try to track him down. Pluto is one of the nameless dogs tracking Mickey!

Pluto was Originally Minnie’s Dog

Pluto appeared again as a pup named Rover that belonged to Minnie. It wasn’t until his third film, “The Moose Hunt,” where he found his permanent place as Mickey’s trusty and faithful companion.

Is Pluto Named After the Planet?

Pluto (which is no longer a planet today) was newly discovered as a planet in 1930. It’s the same year that Pluto solidified his role as Mickey’s pup. Though it can’t be verified, it has been assumed that Walt named our beloved pup after the now non-planet.

Pluto Received an Academy Award

In 1942, Pluto’s cartoon, “Lend a Paw” received an Academy Award for Best Cartoon! The short was dedicated to the Tailwagger Foundation, “in recognition of lending its works in lending a paw to to man’s animal friends.” The Tailwagger Foundation aided sick pets and Walt Disney was a known supporter of the non-profit organization. If you haven’t seen this cartoon, give it a watch below. Pluto always does the right thing, and that’s why I love this loyal pup. The devil’s knocking on his door, but in the end, he is always good. I can always learn a thing or two from him.

Pluto Doesn’t Speak

Pluto expresses himself through pure action. His ears, animated face, and raspy laugh have also been a form of expression for the pup. As seen in the above short, his devil and angel counterparts actually speak, but Pluto himself doesn’t.
